Dr Ole Johan Bakke elected President of European Doctors

Dr Ole Johan Bakke (Norway) was today elected as President of the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) during our General Assembly in Amsterdam. He will serve a three year term from 2025 to 2027, having previously served as Vice-President since 2019.

Dr Bakke graduated from the University of Oslo’s Faculty of Medicine in 1988 and holds two specialties in Public Health and General Medicine. He has worked as a general practitioner and a public health officer since 1990. He has almost 25 years of experience of union work at both local, regional and national level and was elected as a member of the board of the Norwegian Medical Association in 2015, where he served a full term of eight years.

Dr Bakke said “I am honoured by the confidence shown in me by being elected President of CPME. I promise that I will give time, energy and dedication to our mission of contributing the medical profession’s point of view to European policy-making.

“I am committed to provide European doctors’ unwavering support to continue building the European Health Union and to tackle the health workforce crisis which threatens the very functioning of our health systems.

“The healthcare sector does not recruit as needed, neither to serve our populations, nor to give proper working conditions to healthcare professionals. If we do not have the necessary staff, our work to ensure proper working conditions for physicians will have little effect.

“Our political work with the European institutions, our member organisations and fellow European Medical Organisations is therefore more important than ever, to ensure health is given priority in a time when focus is often elsewhere. Our population needs it, they deserve it, as well as our colleagues.”

Outgoing President, Dr Christiaan Keijzer (Netherlands), will complete his successful term at the end of the year and will continue to support CPME as Immediate Past President for the next three years. During the meeting, Dr Keijzer was awarded the silver medal of great merit by the Royal Dutch Medical Association, which is only awarded around once every 10 years.

The General Assembly elected four Vice-Presidents. Dr Andreas Botzlar (Germany), Dr Péter Álmos (Hungary), and Dr Kitty Mohan (United Kingdom) will join the continuing Vice-President Dr Jacqueline Rossant-Lumbroso (France). Prof. Dr Ray Walley (Ireland) has been elected as Treasurer, having served as Vice-President from 2019.

We extend our gratitude to our departing Vice President Dr Martin Balzan, Treasurer Dr Marjo Parkkila-Harju (Finland) and Immediate Past President Prof. Dr Frank Ulrich Montgomery (Germany) for their commitment and hard work.
