Health community’s call to action on clean air

Air pollution is still affecting the health of billions of people across the globe. Also in the EU, there were 357,000 premature deaths from exposure to fine particulate matter, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide in 2022. The health community calls for actions for example to ensure a just and inclusive clean energy transition and fossil fuel phase out.
At the same time, the undersigned commit to leading by example by raising awareness about the health effects of air pollution and its links to climate change among all actors in the public health workforce, patients, and the general public. They also call for integrating air pollution into health curricula, training programmes, continuing education programmes, and professional practice and guidelines. Moreover, the signatories commit to reducing the environmental footprint of health systems.
The call to action was initiated ahead of the upcoming WHO’s second global conference on air pollution and health taking place in Colombia in March.
